Wiscasset Middle School donates to American Cancer Society
A donation to the American Cancer Society had added meaning at Wiscasset Middle School May 3. The school donated $603 in recognition of fifth grade teacher Barbara Wyman.
Wyman has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
“I'm very pleased that they'd like to do that,” she said of students' decision.
Wyman has been teaching in Wiscasset schools about 27 years. She has just finished radiation treatment following a lumpectomy, and hopes this month to move from her current morning teaching schedule back to the full school day.
About 25 students raised $1,809 in a variety show last month. They voted to give one-third to the Cancer Society and one-third to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program. The other third will stay in-house, for either a student's family or staff member in need, WMS Administrative Assistant Cindy Collamore said.
“I feel like I did something for somebody,” fifth grader Olivia Peaslee of Westport said.
Fifth grader Kaden Field of Wiscasset was glad to be giving to both organizations. “Two of my grandparents died of cancer,” he said. As for hunger prevention, he said, “there's a lot of people who don't have enough money for food.”
“I'm just glad I could help raise money for two very serious causes,” seventh-grader Lily Wagg of Bath said. “I'm so lucky I'm healthy and my family isn't out on the street and has food.”
Erika Gould, a youth initiatives coordinator for the Cancer Society's New England division, accepted a check in a ceremony near the Sheepscot River behind the school.
“I am familiar with the amount of hard work that goes into raising that much money, so we're very appreciative,” Gould said in an interview.
The Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program's executive director Karen Parker said the donation it received was heartening. Half the money will go to a food security coalition that serves food banks in Lincoln County, she said.
