After policy change, superintendent eval goes on
Wiscasset's school committee May 27 did what it could not at another recent meeting: The panel did the yearly evaluation of the superintendent of schools.
As a personnel matter, the evaluation takes place in an executive, or closed door, session. But before entering executive session, members were faced with the same problem as last time: Member Jonathan Barnes was absent and, by policy, the superintendent's evaluation was to take place when all members were there.
This time, after member Tracey Whitney reviewed information gathered since last time, the committee, in the Wiscasset Middle High School library and live on the school department's YouTube channel, voted 4-0 to change the policy to require only a quorum.
Whitney explained to fellow members before the vote, a check with department counsel and Maine School Management Association found the all-members requirement was "our wording (and) there was no legal reason" for it to be in the policy.
YouTube coverage did not resume when the committee came out of executive session. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kim Andersson said in an email reply, "We came out of executive session at 8:15 and the meeting was immediately adjourned. There was no other action."
