WJD youth T-shirt design awards

Students who entered the second annual Windjammer Days (WJD) T-shirt Design Contest received certificates of appreciation and awards at Boothbay Region Elementary School Feb. 26.

Forty students in grades two through 11 gave the designing challenge a go – a sign the contest has caught on quickly. Most of the participating students attend BRES and Boothbay Region High School. However, one attends the Center For Teaching and Learning and another is homeschooled.

WJD Committee member and contest coordinator Rosemary Bourette presented the 12 students in attendance with a certificate of appreciation from the WJD Committee for their participation in the contest: Grade two: Pauline Nadeau Miller and Megan Higgins; grade four: Natalie Flagg, Maya Jacobs and Gigi Blake; grade five Meredith Ames and Ronan Drage; grade seven: Maddie Orchard and Cassie Leeman; grade eight; Matthias Fanslau; grade 11; and the winner was BRES fifth grader Chau Nguyen.

Chau received a certificate and the $250 prize. When she found out her design had been chosen by the WJD Committee at its Feb. 11 meeting, she was surprised, but happy.

Her design is of a windjammer on the ocean with fish swimming happily under it, candy falling around it in mid-air; and a flock birds is flying toward the ship as fireworks are exploding in another part of the sky.

Chau chose to draw her three favorite things about the Festival – the ships, candy (street parade) and fireworks, which are no doubt favorites among most children attending the region’s annual celebration.

The students unable to attend the presentation were first graders Lyriah Barbeau, James Barter, Austin Chryplewicz, Jayden Copeland, Gasper Pepa, Sawyer Pierce and Sheyenne Upham; second grader from CTL, Scout Martin; fourth graders Ryleigh Campbell, Owen Cox and Allison Row Smart; fifth graders Allan Crocker, Shawn Gamage, Hayley Holbrook, Aubrey Renee Holmes, Cole Hyson, Aiden Locke, Jason Main, Sophia Mansfield and Aiden Wolfe; seventh grade homeschooler Sawyer Blake; BRES seventh graders Maria E. Michael and Spencer Pottle; eighth graders Matthias Fanslau, Duncan Eli Hardwick, Keana Pitcher, Maya Pangburn and Meg Sledge; BRHS freshman Grace K. Campbell (first design winner in 2019); and junior Zada Smith.

Make sure you get your Chau Nguyen-designed T at this year’s Windjammer Days Festival, June 21-29 at the Committee’s tent in the Waterfront Park. Bourette said the top 10 T-shirt designs will be on display Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24.
