Woolwich meeting July 21 will discuss PAYT
The Woolwich Solid Waste Recycling Committee will host a pay-per-bag informational meeting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 in the Nequasset Meeting House located across from the town office.
The program’s starting date has been pushed back until Sept. 1.
According to a press release from Fred J. Kahrl, chair of the solid waste and recycling committee the WasteZero bags will be orange with the town seal printed on them. WasteZero, a non-profit organization administers the program which includes suppying the disposal bags to be used for non-recyclable trash.
The new bags are being sold in two sizes: small, 15-gallon bags, 10 bags for $10, and large, 30-gallon bags 5 for $10. The bags will be available for purchase at both the Wiscasset ad Bath Shaw’s Supermarket, Ames True Value, Rogers Ace Hardware, Cumberland Farms in Woolwich and the Wiscasset Clipper Mart.
Curbside trash pickup will continue weekly, Tuesday and Wednesday with recycling collection on alternate Mondays. Recycling collection will remain free.
Pay-per-bag, also known as PAYT (Pay As You Throw) is being introduced as a means of reducing the town’s waste disposal costs. Savings come from an anticipated reduction in “tipping fees” the amount per ton the town pays for disposal of its non-recyclable trash.
Beginning Sept. 1 the town will no longer pay for disposal of residential dumpsters. According to Kahrl, dumpster renters will have to make arrangements with their provider for disposal service at personal expense or join the PAYT program.
Questions or concerns will be addressed at Tuesday’s hearing.
