Woolwich plans talks about trash
Woolwich Selectmen will discuss bidding a new contract for curbside trash and recycling pickup with the solid waste and recycling committee.
Monday night, Dec. 21 Fred Kahrl, chairman of the committee, said it is recommending the selectmen consider going with a one-year contract but staying with the same schedule. The present contractor picks up trash weekly and recyclables bi-weekly. The contract with the trash-recycling hauler expires June 30, 2016.
Kahrl said a majority of the committee favored going with a one-year rather than a multi-year contract. Both the committee and selectmen hope that more than one contractor will be interested in bidding. Town Administrator Lynette Eastman said the contract has to be sent out for bid proposals by the early part of March in time for voter consideration at the annual town meeting.
Selectmen will meet with the committee at 5 p.m., Jan. 13 to discuss the wording and duration of the contract.
Following the discussion, Brouck Palen of George Wright Road told selectmen he was seriously looking into starting a petition drive to keep Pay As You Throw. Voters repealed town membership in WasteZero’s PAYT by referendum vote in November. David King Sr. responded any effort to return PAYT would have to come from a citizen’s petition.
After the meeting, Palen told the newspaper he felt PAYT was much more cost-effective than paying for curbside pickup and given a chance would have saved the taxpayers money.
Selectman Lloyd Coombs said Woolwich Central School’s seventh and eighth-graders would perform their annual “Holiday Stroll” on Tuesday, Dec. 22 and walk from the school along the Nequasset Road to the town office. The purpose would be to deliver food items they’ve collected to donate to the Bath Area Food Bank. The items will be distributed to needy families for the holidays. Coombs said the tradition dates back about 20 years. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Departent would be providing raffic control for the walkers.
Selectmen discussed what to do about a collapsed barn on Hedge Bridge Road. There was some discussion of possibly having the fire department burn what remained of the structure. The board hopes to come to some agreement with the property owner.
Selectmen postponed opening bids on the former ambulance until the Jan. 4 meeting.
At the conclusion of the regular meeting the board went into executive session to discuss committee appointments.
The next regular meeting of the board will be 5 p.m., Jan. 4.
