Woolwich school zone in compliance
The speed limit on Nequasset Road in front of Woolwich Central School is posted correctly, Road Commissioner Jack Shaw told Woolwich selectmen Monday night. He said the town was in full compliance.
“Because there’s a student drop-off area at the school there’s no need for a 15 mph speed zone,” Shaw explained.
Shaw said he’d been in touch with Regional School Unit 1 Facilities Director David Richards and officials from the Maine Department of Transportation. Shaw shared an email from Richards stating in part MDOT didn’t approve flashing warning lights on the road during the reconstruction of the school. Instead a bus loop and separate student drop-off area was added at the school’s front entrance.
School zone signs were placed on the road to alert motorists on both sides of the property. A sign on the east side is just past the bridge; the one on the west side is 100 yards on the right approaching the school.
The posted speed limit on Nequasset Road including the portion in front of the school is 25 mph.
Last month in response to a complaint of speeding motorists, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department placed a lighted mobile sign on the road warning motorists to slow down.
“My thoughts would be if we observe traffic speeding on the road to alert the sheriff’s office,” Shaw said.
The Woolwich Fire Department and EMS will hold their annual open house Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. Fire Chief Mike Demers said the open house will feature tours of the firehouse, fire prevention information and door prizes. Residents of all ages are welcome to attend.
Demers told selectmen the fire department had responded to eight calls over the last two weeks, including two motor vehicle accidents and a mutual aid call for a small woods fire.
EMS Director Julia Gillespie said the ambulance had responded to nine calls over the last two weeks.
Also Monday night, selectmen approved spending $2,700 to install new emergency warning lights at the intersection of Nequasset Road and Route 1. The lights will be purchased using funds from the fire department’s equipment replacement account.
Selectman Lloyd Coombs said the Events Committee would observe Veteran’s Day with a special ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Nequasset Meeting House. The program will begin at 11 a.m. Veterans, their families, friends and others are invited to attend.
Selectman Allison Hepler said a composting workshop will be held 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Woolwich Elementary School. The Solid Waste & Recycling Committee will be giving away a roll of plastic trash bags to participants.
Selectmen authorized minor repairs to the Tanner Square memorial.
