Working session on Westport Island history Feb. 2

Tue, 01/28/2020 - 8:30am

The Westport Island History Committee has scheduled work sessions at the historic Town Hall every third Sunday through the winter, opening up the History Room so members can do organizing and cataloging of the collection, as well as assist the public. The first open work session will be Sunday, Feb. 2. Members of the committee will be at the Town Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., so come when it’s convenient, with plenty of time to go home to watch the Super Bowl.

The committee would especially like to encourage citizens interested in the town’s history, or town family genealogy, to come and make use of the resources the committee has to offer. This will not be an open house, with objects or documents on display, but committee members can explain the resources the town has to offer for individual research.

Do you have some old letters, newspaper clippings, birth announcements, advertising flyers, or old pieces of farm or kitchen equipment? The committee wants to encourage anyone with artifacts or documents relating to Westport Island’s history to bring them to share. Even if you’re not interested in donating or loaning the item, committee members would love to take information about the artifact or document it for our records, to help researchers in the future. There will be a scanner available so we can take an image of documents that are brought in.

If you’re interested in Westport Island’s history and want to become more involved with preserving it, come and learn about opportunities with the committee and the newly formed Friends of Westport Island History.
