Yard sale hopping on Westport Island
Saturday morning at Westport Island’s 11-mile yard sale, Joy Bancroft of Jefferson said a lamp was her only buy so far that she had needed to get. But it wasn’t her only buy. She found an over-sized mug that she said will make her cup of coffee last longer at home.
Bancroft also got a set of wide, mug-like bowls with handles. “They were four for two bucks,” she said as she held one up. “You could put chop suey in it, or anything,” she said.
Finds were being made around the island June 13 by those who turned out for the one-day event, in its second year. Resident Susan Partelow organized it this year and in 2014. Someone else had come up with the idea for a town-wide sale but no one had acted on it, so she floated the idea online and found there was interest among fellow residents.
“I thought it would be something fun to do, and a way to get people out to see the island,” said Partelow, surrounded by shoppers moving in all directions inside her home.
Saturday’s weather helped show off the island’s springtime beauty for visitors. Overnight rain gave way to sun, light winds and morning temperatures hovering around 70 F, according to meteorologist Margaret Curtis of the National Weather Service’s Gray office.
Signs and balloons at some intersections, as well as a map handout with red dots denoting yard sale locations, helped guide the bargain-hunters.
On Ferry Road, Jane Robillard of Kerrville, Texas, bought a joke cane with a bicycle-type horn on it. The cane’s seller parted with it for the 20 cents Robillard had in her pocket.
Wiscasset’s Toni Brawn, who’s taking up quilt-making, got a quilt stand on North End Road.
On Main Road, Carrie Genthner of Waldoboro looked at an oil lamp that Stan Lane and his wife of nearly 29 years, Norma Dreyfus, used to have on their sailboat. The Westport Island couple’s other items for sale included an 1822 Bible that Lane said came from a Damariscotta barn; a solid brass propeller recovered from Long Island Sound; and an old wrench.
“It’s got to be 75 years old,” he said.
Lane told an incoming shopper that the yard sale sign there was for sale. Everything was, if it wasn’t nailed down, he said.
