Donald E. Davey Bridge repairs slated for spring
Work to replace the wearing surface and joints on the Donald E. Davey Bridge over the Sheepscot River will begin sometime in late March or early April, according MDOT Program Manager Nate Benoit.
Benoit attended the selectmen’s meeting February 19 to explain how and when the work would be done. “We know this work may be inconvenient for motorists, and we will do everything we can to minimize the inconvenience,” Benoit said.
There will be two, 11-foot-six-inch lanes open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and one lane of alternating traffic between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Work may occur both day and night, with no work allowed on Sundays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. and wide loads may be restricted.
“The contractor has 35 days and 24 nights with one-way traffic to do the work,” Benoit said according to his contract. “If he is successful he will be given a bonus. The work will be completed by mid-June.”
The contractor awarded the bid is Wyman & Simpson, Inc. of Richmond, the low bidder at just under $1.2 million.
Other bridge work planned for Route 1 is the Station 46 Bridge that spans the Nequasset Brook in Woolwich. This bridge work will begin this month and will continue to mid-August.
However, according to Benoit, traffic impacts will end by mid-June when the work crews start repairing the underside of the bridge.
Wide loads will be prohibited while construction is under way, according to Benoit.
Motorists are being asked to allow extra time or seek alternate routes.
