Shed art question goes to Westport Island voters

Westport Island selectmen on Monday reconsidered their decision against graphic art on the new sand and salt shed.

Resident Davies Allan had suggested a mural and offered a cash prize for the winning design. Selectmen voted against the idea May 14. On Monday, resident Bailey Bartlett asked the board to reconsider.

Saying a mural would look better than “harsh concrete,” Bartlett provided selectmen with samples of murals that decorate other buildings. She offered to work with other local artists on a community project.

Selectman George D. Richardson Jr. suggested Bartlett let residents decide at the annual town meeting June 23. Selectman Jerry Bodmer asked about the type of art Bartlett had in mind. She replied the art would be “subtle.”  She said she would show selectmen a sketch of the proposed design for their approval before beginning the project.

Selectmen then voted to create a warrant article for the town meeting so voters could decide.

In other business, selectmen unanimously approved a request from Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12 administrative assistant Leslie Burgess concerning a literacy program for new students. Burgess explained in an email, the RSU would supply bags with age-appropriate books for students in grades preK to 8 who come in to register. Since residency for new Westport Island students needs to be verified at the town office, the bags would be left there to be given to new students.

Selectmen also approved and signed a contract with the Coastal Humane Society and the Lincoln County Animal Shelter for $718 for services between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.

A “scoping meeting” for the FEMA storm grant will be held at 9 a.m. May 30 at the town office to review the damage inventory and claims from the October 2017 windstorm.
