Students sweep the River of Words Poetry Contest
Six students from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in Edgecomb were selected as finalists in the 2013 River of Words Poetry Contest, sponsored by the Center for Environmental Literacy at St. Mary’s College of California.
Poems by eighth graders Wallace Jackson of Woolwich and Xander Bartone of Bath, seventh grader Noah Jordan of Alna, fifth grader MacAllister Moss of Bristol, second-grader Grace Dempsey-Blair of Phippsburg, and first-grader Ian VonFrank of Alna were selected from among tens of thousands of entries by Robert Hass, United States Poet Laureate (1995-1997) and Pamela Michael, the Executive Director of River of Words.
The children, who were the only contest-winners in Maine, were encouraged in their nature writings and observations by teachers Nancie Atwell, Glenn Powers and Ted DeMille.
