Once again, a horrible incident elsewhere has moved people here. Monday’s explosion that CNN said killed one Farmington firefighter and injured several others and another man had an impact beyond the building it destroyed and homes it damaged. As the news spread over Maine and the nation, our towns’ public safety Facebook pages lit up with condolences and prayers:

Wiscasset Fire Rescue: “It’s a sad day when anyone dies at a fire-related incident. It hits too close to home when the one lost is a firefighter. It reminds us all of the risks we take when responding. Sending healing thoughts to Farmington Fire and their families.”

Wiscasset Police Department: “Thoughts and prayers going out to Farmington.”

Woolwich Fire/Rescue: “Rest in peace Captain Bell. We thank you for your service.”

Edgecomb Fire Department ran Gov. Janet Mills’ announcement to immediately fly flags at half staff.

Alna Volunteer Fire Department: “Sad news from Farmington. Prayers for the valiant firefighters and their families. Everyone in the fire service feels this loss.”

Dresden Fire/Rescue: “Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts and prayers go out to all those impacted by this tragedy. R.I.P., Captain Bell. You have been a great example of dedication and commitment.”

Westport Volunteer Fire Department: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Farmington Fire & Rescue as well as the community.”

Boothbay Fire Department: “Please keep responders in your prayers. One killed in line of duty and several ... injured.”

Wiscasset Ambulance Service and several other agencies ran Farmington Fire & Rescue’s emblem with a black band.

These gestures of support took a moment to post online about a horror that will impact Farmington for generations. To those agencies and to all the responders who traveled to Farmington from around Maine Monday to show their respects to the firefighter killed, you represented our towns well, voicing their grief and yours. Thank you for that, and for your service.
