Fire department donates truck to Rockland school
Although it was unable to find a purchaser, the Edgecomb Fire Department's erstwhile engine No. 5 will still find a new home.
During the May 20 board of selectmen meeting, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said that the truck, which has been for sale since last fall, didn't attract any buyers.
It did however catch the eye of Mike Drinkwater, fire fighting instructor at Mid-Coast School of Technology in Rockland.
“We've been trying to sell the fire truck, but we were unsuccessful in trying to get anyone to buy it,” Potter said. “I received a call, and the (Edgecomb) fire department is in full support of donating the truck.”
The board of selectmen green-lit a proposal to donate the truck to the school.
The 1984 truck will be used for instruction at the school. Potter said the model didn't draw enough interest and that by donating it the truck might help train new firefighters.
“Maybe we can get some kids in Edgecomb to enroll, maybe not. But, they will be training future firefighters, so it's a good cause,” Potter said.
With the truck off the town rolls, it also means the insurance bill comes off the books as well. In the fall, Potter said he was hoping to recoup up to $15,000 by selling the truck.
The auxiliary has bought the last three trucks, including the 1990 engine that replaced the outgoing one.
“We've been fortunate enough to get these vehicles,” he said. “This is a chance to pay it forward.”
