Alfred M. Norton Jr.
Alfred Metcalf “Fritz” Norton Jr., 81, of Nashua, N.H. and Southport, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Community Hospice House, Merrimack, N.H.
Born April 11, 1932 in Reading, Pa., Fritz was the son of the late Elizabeth Stevens and Alfred Metcalf Norton Sr. He had two older sisters, Nancy Norton Boucher and Elizabeth Norton Dow (“Betsy,”) both now deceased.
Fritz was a 1950 graduate of Gould Academy in Bethel and a 1954 graduate of Middlebury College. He was also a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy and served in the Coast Guard for three years during the Korean War.
He was employed by the Maine Manufacturing Company from 1960 until he retired in 1996 as president of the company. He was active in his community, serving over his life as a trustee of the Derryfield School, President of the Nashua Children’s Association, President of the Charles H. Nutt Board of Trustees for 27 years, and as a longtime member of the Twenty Associates.
Fritz was a lifelong boating enthusiast who loved nothing more than being on the water on the coast of Maine with his family. He was a longtime member of the Southport Yacht Club, and was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known to be a great storyteller and regaled friends and family with his jokes and humor.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Guthrie Norton, of Nashua; three children, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Norton and her husband Thomas Rohrer, of San Anselmo, Calif., Alfred M. “Pete” Norton III and his wife Susan, of Boothbay, and Dr. Kristen Norton Mugnai and her husband George, of Alna; and seven grandchildren, Samuel, Lucas, and Caroline Rohrer, Katherine and Timothy Norton, and Cameron and Clara Mugnai.
There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 24 at 11 a.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert Odierna from the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 214 Main St., Nashua, N.H. Friends are invited to attend. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery, Wiscasset.
