Digital painting
David Higgins, the artist of the month at the Southport Memorial Library during July and August, will speak on the new art of digital painting and demonstrate some techniques at the library on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Higgins is a photographer and painter who resides in Newcastle and is well known in the Midcoast as a teacher of digital photography.
Higgins describes digital painting as a new art that is neither photographic nor painted; it is a combination of the two produced almost entirely on the computer and printed on various art papers and canvases. Digital painting involves the use of a tablet and computer with Photoshop software to create a work of art with the same painterly techniques used with a real brush and wet paint. It is a new medium, and Higgins digital paintings have sparked a great deal of interest locally.
You can see Higgins' show during July and August at the Southport Memorial Library at 1032 Hendricks Hill Rd. at the southern tip of Southport Island. The exhibit contains a number of digital paintings and photographs. It will be on view during the library's regular summer hours, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with evening hours Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The phone number is 633-2741.
