Westport Island town meeting preview
Westport Island will hold its annual town meeting and election of town officers on June 28 and 29.
On June 28, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., residents will be called upon to vote on three articles, the first being to choose a moderator for the town meeting June 29.
Residents will also vote for the positions of first selectman and road commissioner, along with two budget committee members
They will also vote on whether to allocate $5,000 for an easement to protect public access to the municipal boat launch and parking area near the Wright Landing. That article will also ask for permission to appraise the site and for the ability to put it up for sale.
Other articles will be decided during the town meeting on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Westport Island Town Hall.
At that time, selectmen-proposed 1.75 percent raises for town officers may be approved, including those of the selectmen, tax collector, town clerk, harbor master and others.
Budget committee members (4-1) proposed a salaries' budget of $68,759 versus selectmen, who proposed a budget of $69,965.
Other expenditures include $72,000 in fees to the Wiscasset Transfer Station, $13,000 for the volunteer fire department, $5,138 for the Wiscasset Public Library and $3,500 to repaint the Westport Island Town Hall ceiling.
