Dresden man escapes blaze
An early morning fire destroyed a home at 406 Cedar Grove Road in Dresden June 29, emergency officials said.
Homeowner James Crawson got out of bed after smelling smoke and hearing smoke detectors sounding, Dresden firefighter Sonia Lilly said. Crawson escaped the old, two-story wood-framed home unharmed and reported the fire around 7:30 a.m., Lilly said.
Crawson lived alone in the home; Lilly did not know if the home was insured, or if Crawson’s two cats had escaped the fire.
The home was a total loss, Lilly said; the Red Cross is expected to help Crawson find temporary housing.
Damage was so extensive that the cause of the fire could not be determined, but the blaze apparently started in an attached wood shed, Lilly said. The fire was not suspicious, she said.
Firefighters from Wiscasset, Woolwich, Westport Island, Newcastle, Richmond, Litchfield, Pittston, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and West Bath helped Dresden firefighters put out the stubborn fire, Lilly said. Wiscasset and North East ambulance services also responded to the scene. The Dresden Fire Department also received assistance from Lincoln County 911 and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, Lilly said.
