'Sea Lives' reception
The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath will feature the artwork of Sonja Weber Gilkey from September 7 to October 21. The exhibit, entitled “Sea Lives,” explores the intertwined nature of her ocean-inspired sculptural art.
Gilkey is a visual artist born in The Netherlands who derives most of her inspiration and materials from the sea. There is a tangible connectivity demonstrated in Gilkey's work. And there is a message – let's preserve what we still have.
“My rope sculptures are each manifestations of our infinity on earth,” Gilkey said. “Rope is universal and used in all aspects of life.”
The exhibit will feature the celebrated Fishermen’s Crosses and select large scale works including Les Ames En Route which received a special prize from the American Folk Art Museum in New York City.
In Maine, Gilkey has lived surrounded by the deep power of the sea, activities of the lobster men, their boats, crates, the sound of the fog horns and the eddies of water by her cottage.
For over 50 years, Gilkey has been closely intertwined with the people and nature of Maine. Her life and art is profoundly influenced by the stories of lives working at sea and the life and beauty of Maine.
