Not here fir-ever: Two Wiscasset trees destined for removal
A couple of Wiscasset's more visible trees are destined for take-down. The willow near the police station and the live fir that towers next to the municipal building are both slated for removal, for different reasons.
The willow, which dates to the 1980s, is dead; the fir, planted in the 1970s, is hampering visibility for ambulance and fire truck drivers heading out on calls, Wiscasset Ambulance Service Director Roland Abbott said April 18. On April 15, selectmen approved its removal.
Abbott and Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry requested the fir go, so the emergency workers can see the Route 1 traffic better and motorists can see them better.
It was an easy decision, due to the visibility issue, Selectmen's Chairman Ed Polewarczyk said April 18.
The take-down of the fir will also make room for as many as 12 parking spaces for emergency workers’ personal vehicles; right now, those get parked on Route 1, Abbott said.
A town crew will be removing both trees, Abbott said. That will likely take place sometime this spring, Wiscasset Road Commissioner Doug Fowler said April 19.
