Woolwich town meeting May 7
In Maine, spring brings no assurance of warm, sunny days, but, in many Maine communities, it does offer an opportunity to engage in town governance.
The town of Woolwich will hold its annual town meeting on May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Woolwich Central School. Among the 37 articles, voters will be asked to approve the town’s budget, new expenditures for cemetery maintenance and whether to pursue pay-as-you-throw refuse disposal model.
In general, budget items in this year’s town warrant are similar to last year’s approved warrant. This year’s warrant includes a new line item for $7,060 to maintain cemeteries and veterans’ graves. The proposed stipend to local cemetery associations comes in response to a new state law, and was developed in meetings between the selectmen and cemetery associations.
Voters will also have the opportunity to approve a proposal to develop pay-as-you-throw refuse disposal for Woolwich. Article 31, if approved, would direct the Woolwich Solid Waste and Recycling Committee to develop a pay-as-you-throw system for handling the town’s non-recyclable trash, and to present a proposal to voters within the next year.
