Dresden board debates ambulance change-over
Residents at Dresden’s June 14 town meeting will vote on a possible change in ambulance service that came up during the May 19 selectmen’s meeting.
Selectmen listed response times for the current North East Mobile Health Services as a major concern that warranted their review.
Gardiner Town Manager Scott Morelli and Gardiner Fire Chief Dan Guimond both attended the meeting to discuss its ambulance service with the board as a prospective alternative for Dresden.
This year the town will complete its five-year contract with North East, so the town can opt to go with another ambulance service. The board has been requesting specs from other ambulance services, including Gardiner and Wiscasset.
North East’s response times, it seems, have been often much longer than other services the town has had in the past, according to their analysis. Sometimes the time has been as long as one-hour, which leaves emergency situations, such as heart attack and stroke victims, at a high risk, they said.
Another issue the board raised about ambulance service concerns the matter of North East charging the town $7,700 this year up from $4,200 last year.
Selectmen said that in the past, when Dresden had the Gardiner ambulance service, the service had better response times than North East.
After some discussion, the board decided to look further into the matter of the future ambulance service for the town, which will come before the town meeting on Saturday, June 10 at Pownalborough Hall.
Town elections
Selectmen also discussed the Tuesday, June 10 town elections, listing candidates on the ballot. Third Selectman Allan Moeller Sr. will run for another three-year term of office against Dale Hinote. The town staggers the election of board members.
This year Joseph Atkinson has decided to run for town treasurer with no opponents, since incumbent Kim Rzasa has opted out of running for the position she has held for several years.
No one will appear on the ballot for town clerk, a rare situation for the town. That means any write-in who receives the most number of write-ins could win the election if desired. Incumbent Kim Rzasa has decided not to run for that position either, a position she has also held for several years.
For the tax collector position, incumbent Ann Pierce will run again for the one-year term. Pierce will also run for the one-year excise tax collector position, which incumbent Kim Rzasa has held, but for which she will not seek reelection this year.
No one will appear on the ballot for the vacant positions on the budget review committee.
Dresden will hold its elections from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. at Pownalborough Hall on Tuesday, June 10.
