All invited to the first ever Schooner Cove Car Show

One of John Harris’ favorite things about car shows is the stories of fellow classic car enthusiasts.
One couple, married more than 60 years, told him that they started their married lives with an REO automobile, like the one Harris had brought to that particular show.
“It brings back happy memories to a lot of people,” he said. “It is fun seeing people’s eyes light up.”
Harris plans to bring a 1912 Model T Ford to the first annual Schooner Cove Car Show at Chase Point Assisted Living on the Miles Campus of LincolnHealth in Damariscotta on Tuesday, August 5 at 4:30 p.m. (Rain date August 6). Other cars expected to be present are a Model T woody, as well as a 56 Ford Fairlane owned by Roy Griffin, of Bristol, father of Karen Westhaver, executive director of Schooner Cove.
Westhaver said that in addition to classic cars, there will be hot dogs, lemonade, ice cream and music.
Growing up with a father who was a fan of vintage Fords and raced at the Wiscasset Speedway, Westhaver absorbed her love of cars through osmosis. She remembers visiting the speedway with her siblings when she was seven and hearing the thunder as the race started.
To this day, she loves the rumble of classic car engines and going to car shows.
“I love to go around and look at the different cars. I love the shape of them. I love listening to people tell their stories. They always start with ‘Back in the day’,” said Westhaver.
For those who understand cars or simply have special memories involving cars, a classic car show can be a sort of moveable museum, with a story behind each vehicle about a particular time in history.
The Model T that Harris will bring was built before brass all but disappeared from cars around the beginning of World War I. At the time, it was considered a sporty Model T.
Harris said he may also bring a 1937 Packard convertible that was purchased in the Washington, D.C. area by a member of his family. That particular car is rumored to have carried President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, although Harris said he has never been able to confirm that story.
