Solar energy advocates to be at Wiscasset polls
Imagine solar panels on Wiscasset municipal buildings, generating clean, sustainable electricity while saving taxpayers’ money. Too good to be true?
A group of citizens from Lincoln County calling themselves the Wiscasset Sun Cats, has started to explore this idea with town leaders and Maine solar companies. The group will greet voters at the polls on Tuesday, June 9, to share their findings. They will ask Wiscasset residents to sign a letter of support addressed to the town’s board of selectmen to continue looking into this possibility, and if it makes economic sense, to move ahead with the renewable energy installation.
“With the cost of solar energy plummeting to the point that it’s becoming cheaper than power generated by coal, oil and gas, our group thinks this is a great time for Wiscasset to explore photovoltaics and solar heat for its facilities,” Sun Cats Spokesperson Marty Fox said. “Across Maine solar sales and installations are growing, providing increasing numbers of good-paying jobs to local residents, and boosting local economies.”
The Sun Cats are planning educational activities over the summer and fall to generate interest in solar and renewable power among Wiscasset residents. The group envisions a community solar farm in the area sometime in the future, similar to one currently under construction in Edgecomb.
