Midcoast Outreach and Peace Center program July 2
The Midcoast Outreach and Peace Center will present the second program in the Public Dialogue Series entitled “Healing Humanitarian Crises —Exceptional Relief Work Conducted in the World Today.” Two prominent humanitarian workers, Bob Eaton and Martin Barber, will speak about the aid work in which they have been involved in different regions of the world. The series includes people who have assisted individuals and communities whose lives are or have been endangered by ongoing wars, natural catastrophes, misfortunes or adversity.
The program, which is free, will be presented on Thursday, July 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Friends’ meetinghouse, 77 Belvedere Road in Damariscotta. A light dinner of soup and bread will be offered at 5:45 p.m. before the presentations.
Eaton has more than 25 years of experience planning and managing rehabilitation programs for war-devastated countries. He was the founder and executive director of the Survey Action Center (SAC), an international group of leading U.N. and N.G.O. (non-governmental organizations) that are working to eliminate landmines and cluster munitions. He also had a significant role on the development and acceptance of the Landmine Ban Treaty.
Barber, the second speaker, has worked with NGOs in Southeast Asia on humanitarian and peace initiatives and with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees in Laos and Thailand. He served in the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in Bosnia-Herzegovina and as a humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan. He has extensive experience in peace operations, and was the director of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) until his retirement.
