Strawberry sundaes, crafts, music, a silent auction and a pie auction attracted throngs to St. Philip’s Church in Wiscasset on Saturday for the annual Strawberry Festival.
In addition to supporting church functions, the annual event contributes to the local Feed for Scholars Backpack Program, according to co-organizer Beth Cowing Young.
The program supplies food for in-need students with paper bag items that go home from school in the students’ backpacks.
In addition, St. Philip’s and the Congregational Church help support the “help yourself shelf” food program, she said.
According to her husband, John Young, some of the proceeds go to complete repairs to the church steeple. Although $14,000 has gone into the reconstruction, the balance of the $36,000 project cost needs to be raised.
Beth Cowing Young and Kristen Cowing are co-organizers for the event.
