Skidompha summer youth readers, businesses donate to animal shelter
Skidompha Library’s annual (and always popular) Summer Reading Program has gone to the dogs. And the cats. And any other kind of animal that finds a temporary home at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb.
This year, 291 kids are participating in the Summer Reading Program, and have read some 2,800 hours so far. But unlike previous years, their efforts are going to a good cause with the help of two area businesses.
Every item donated to the shelter represents five hours of reading and has a label on it with the child's name who “earned” the item. The Summer Reading Program Sponsor is Reny's, which was joined by Ames True Value store in Wiscasset to make the effort a spectacular success.
Skidompha approached Ames with a budget of what the library could spend on items for the kids to earn and donate to the animal shelter.
“Ames selected all the items for us based on the needs of the shelter, and then more than matched our contribution by giving even more items, and then delivered them all to the library,” said Youth Librarian Jennifer Betts.
