Former police officer facing sex charges
A Jefferson gun shop owner and former Waldoboro police officer is expected to go to trial early next month in a case alleging he sexually molested two young boys. Leigh Abbott, 67, of Jefferson was indicted in November 2011 on eight counts of unlawful sexual contact for incidents that allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2011.
Abbott was employed as an officer for the Waldoboro Police Department, “a long, long time ago,” according to Public Safety Secretary Melody Tracy.
Abbott's Augusta attorney, Walter McKee, said his defendant has pleaded “not guilty” and maintains his position in this matter.
Jury selection will take place December 5 and the trial is set for sometime the following week in Lincoln County Superior Court, McKee said. At this point, a call for comment to the Abbott home has not been returned.
