More than a meal
The Edgecomb Thrift Shop started 10 years ago because two of us needed “something to do.” The community lunch grew because we brought food to share, and there was always plenty, so we invited shoppers to join us. We finally decided to just do lunch, and over the years the lunch has taken on a life of its own.
Recently someone told me that she had been told this lunch was “for indigents” and she should not be attending. Our Tuesday lunch is for everyone. There is never a charge.
It may be that now and then someone is in need of a meal, but we have found that people need more than a meal. Tuesday lunch has become a place to gather, to meet neighbors, and just to get out of the house.
People start showing up anytime after 11 a.m. just to chat and to shop. Lunch is served at noon. There is always a nutritious meal, often with “seconds” and containers for take-home. After we eat, people just jump in and magically clean up. By 1 p.m. it is as if nothing ever happened in that space.
Our lunches are served every Tuesday at noon. You will find us there all year-round, unless schools are closed due to weather. If there is no school, there are no thrift shop hours. The shop is open for a few hours every Tuesday and Thursday morning. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we offer a turkey potluck meal. The thrift shop provides turkeys, potatoes and gravy, stuffing and veggies. People will bake pies or bring a favorite dish if they can. A contribution of food is optional. There is always plenty.
The shop is located in the lower level of Edgecomb Community Church, UCC on Cross Point Road in Edgecomb. You can call Louise Hardina for more information, 207-563-5236, or look for our newspaper ads.
