Voter turnout heavy in the Twin Villages
Despite not having any local candidates or issues on the ballot, voter turnout was heavy in the Twin Villages on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Both Damariscotta and Newcastle saw voter turnout remain steady throughout the day, despite neither town having anything other than state questions on the ballot.
At 9:30 a.m. Newcastle Town Clerk Dawn Burns reported that more than 40 people had voted on the three articles.
In Damariscotta, Town Clerk Michelle Cameron reported much of the same: despite only voting for the three questions, voters had shown up to cast their ballots.
There were almost 300 votes cast at 3 p.m. in Damariscotta, with most of the attention focused on Question 1, Cameron said. The first question relates to Maine’s clean elections initiative.
Statewide, all three questions were passed by voters and the local results mirrored the state.
By the time the polls closed in Damariscotta 446 votes had been cast.
Damariscotta voters overwhelmingly went for Question 1, with 274 votes for and 169 votes against with three ballots left blank.
The second question, which dealt with a $15 million bond for low-income senior housing, was passed in Damariscotta by a 342-102 margin, with two ballots left blank.
The third question asked voters to approve a $85 million bond issue for highway improvements. To that question, Damariscotta's voters said yes – 360 votes for and 86 votes against.
Newcastle saw 402 voters head to the polls.
The first question was the closest, but still wasn't competitive: Newcastle voters approved the Maine Clean Election Fund changes 258 to 141 with three blank ballots.
In the second question Newcastle tallied 303 yes votes against 99 no votes.
The third question went overwhelmingly to the yes side – with 323 votes for, and 76 votes against with three blank ballots.
