Selectmen discuss North End Road repairs
Selectmen have considered a request for the town to help pay for repairs on North End Road at two consecutive meetings (November 19 and 26), even though the costs are undetermined.
The portion of the road to be repaired is part of a Public Easement Road, which town funds cannot be used for, unless approved by the voters, according to Selectman George Richardson.
Dick Morris made the request for some help with maintenance costs for the road to Clough Point, North End Road. He said additional traffic has put a burden on the road. The selectmen plan to inform Morris that the town cannot put any money on that road unless it is approved by a town vote.
However, the selectmen did suggest Morris contact the Conservation Commission and see if they would help with funds from the Clough Point account. The only other option would be to put an article on the town warrant for next year’s town meeting.
According to many who live on the island, the Clough Point Preserve is a Westport Island treasure for the use and enjoyment of residents and visitors. The 8-acre natural area was purchased by the town in 1971 and is maintained by the Conservation Commission. Hiking trails, picnic areas and benches at scenic points allow beautiful views of Wiscasset village, the harbor, Fort Edgecomb and working lobster boats. However, because of its attraction to many, the North End Road has additional traffic.
At a past town meeting, townspeople did approve spending money on the road for repairs. The selectmen will encourage an article be written for the 2013 town meeting in June if funds are still needed
Site visit scheduled
Planning Board Chairman Ruth Nelson told selectmen at their Monday meeting that the planning board was holding a site visit Sunday, Dec. 2 at 12 p.m.
The site visit is at 488 West Shore Road, at the 3 Eagle Farm, where miniature horses are being raised.
Nelson told selectmen the public is welcome to attend the site visit.
Town appointments’ review
The selectmen will review the town committee appointment roster to insure the committee members are still active and wish to continue on the various town committees.
A copy of the committee appointments held by the selectmen will be compared to what is on file at the town office to insure the roster is current and accurate.
