Scam reminder
Lincoln County Sheriff's Department Detective Robert McFetridge reported Tuesday that on Monday, Feb. 4, an older resident of Damariscotta received a telephone call in the afternoon from someone claiming to be from Medicare.
The caller was a female with an accent, and she told the resident that they were sending out new cards and needed to verify some information. This included trying to obtain the resident's bank account numbers by reading off routing numbers for local banks.
Residents should be reminded that Medicare does not send out new cards unless a person requests new cards.
The scammers may be trying to use the fact that some people who use Medicare had to change supplemental insurance and trick them into thinking that when they did new cards would be issued. This is not the case. New cards will not be issued.
Remember never give out personal information out to someone you don't know or someone you did not call.
