Festive assortment

Hats off to Edgecomb for premiering its Charlie Brown Christmas tree-decorating contest, with “sorriest tree” and other categories that befit the Peanuts classic holiday special so many of us grew up watching and still think of fondly at this time of year. The special was funny and meaningful, and so was Edgecomb’s effort.

It joined in with Boothbay’s Festival of Lights and helped spread the holiday cheer over the peninsula that shares the Sheepscot River with Wiscasset. And from businesses to local schoolchildren who entered, the response was good for a first year. It showed foremost that the holiday spirit and community spirit live, and secondarily that sometimes, we all just want to have fun.

Do it again, every year. Maybe it will inspire ones in Wiscasset and other towns, adding to their festive displays and events. We’ve got a lot of pictures this week from the Wiscasset Holiday Marketfest. The colored lights all around our towns, including some nice lights this holiday season at the Alna Fire Station on Route 218, warm the Christmas heart on these colder nights that have arrived.

Let’s also think of the green of the wreaths bound for soldiers’ graves and that traveled through Wiscasset Sunday night en route to Arlington National Cemetery.

If you are a snow fan, you have a lot of white to celebrate. It looks like it will stick around. I am not a snow fan, and I am not alone. But all of us have the colors of the season to cherish.
