Acclaimed western swing band Hot Club of Cowtown July 27
The internationally known, high-flying, Austin, Texas,-based trio Hot Club of Cowtown will be in the spotlight later this month at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor.
Their music has been described as “country music that swings” and “jazz with a twang.” On Friday, July 27, at 8 p.m. they will bring their western swing to downtown Boothbay Harbor.
Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys and Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli’s Hot Club both blended early 20th century blues and jazz with the folk music of their culture. Both featured hot-shot fiddlers and guitarists, and both operated in their classic form from 1934 to 1949, so they may have been aware of, and influenced by, eachother.
The Hot Club Of Cowtown pays tribute to both bands by its name and on their most recent album with a disc of Bob Wills songs played as if members of each band showed up for the same gig. The concert at the Opera House will include many songs from this swinging collection.
The trio of Elana James, fiddl), Whit Smith, guitar, and Jake Erwin, bass, have released a string of acclaimed albums, toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson among others, been inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, and in 2011 were named Best Music Group by True West Magazine and their most recent album was named to the Top 100 Roots Country Album list. They’ve performed at Lincoln Center, the National Folk Festival, the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and The Barns at Wolftrap in addition to hundreds of venues in Great Britain and Australia.
Music lovers will love the sound of their 1925 Gibson and their 1937 Gibson amp among other classic gear on stage.
“This (group) will bring even the tamest audience to its feet,”The Chicago Tribune reports.
Advance tickets are $17. Tickets purchased on the day of the show are $22. The Opera House box office is located at 86 Townsend Ave. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are also available by calling 633-5159, or at www.boothbayoperahouse.com.
