Wiscasset, the Federal Aviation Administration, and Chewonki Campground are nearing a settlement that would pay the campground $280,000 for an avigation agreement to remove numerous trees.

The campground is expected to receive $280,000 in exchange for the easement, under a proposed deal selectmen are set to consider tonight. Ninety percent of the funds will be paid by the FAA, five percent by the Maine Department of Transportation, and five percent, or $14,000, by the town, according to documents the town released Tuesday.

Pam Brackett, co-owner of Chewonki Campground, said she did not know if she could legally discuss the settlement, and declined to comment, but said she would try to be at tonight's selectmen's meeting. The easement's closing date is expected to be in a few weeks.

Among other items, the agreement discusses the cutting process, the septic system improvements covered in an easement held by Chewonki over the airport, and operational issues, such as flight paths and noise abatement.

The town and the campground are still hammering out issues around construction. That will be a separate agreement, according to the documents the town released.
