Alna Column: Supper, Egg Express and more
I'm sorry to say that we lost another resident last Friday. Condolences to the family and friends of Patricia Albee. I spent time with Tom and Pat while buying their vegetables. I have known Tom since forever, and met Pat when they moved to the farm after Maynard passed. She was friendly, had a sweet smile and was a very hard worker. Patrica will be missed by many.
Yes, Alna Fire Department's Baked Bean and Ham Supper is this Saturday, April 12, 4:30 to 6 p.m. The usual good food, beans, ham, salads, deserts, pies and beverages; also fun pie auction and 50/50 raffle. If you never attended one of these suppers, you don't know what you’re missing. The best cooks in Maine live in Alna; ask anyone who partakes. Some folks have been attending for as many years as they have been serving this good food; yes, myself included, and I plan to be there Saturday.
The Easter Egg Express will be running five trips to the Alna Center for children and the "young at heart." The price is the same for all ages, young and mature alike. There are two age groups: 5 and under, and 6 and over. If you’re lucky enough to find a gold egg, you also win an Easter basket. This is all being done on April 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the railroad station on the Cross Road. I hope they get a warm, sunny day. Come and enjoy being a kid again while watching the children have fun.
Hidden Valley Nature Center is having a medicinal exploration guided tour by Deb Soule on April 18, 1 to 4:30 p.m. You should met at the gate. You will learn about plants, trees, etc., that can be used for medicine, how to identify them, and what to do to make remedies from them. This is a class. For more information about price and scholarships available, visit www.hvnc.org.
The 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were met with a tremendous amount of excitement and record breaking student participation. Approximately 255,000 original works of art and writing were submitted to the awards and 1,800 young folks from grades 7 to 12 were awarded medals.
Congratulations to our own Noah Jordan for being one of the recipients. On June 5 he will go to Carnegie Hall in New York City for the award ceremony. This is a big honor for this young man. Honora and Myles must be very proud of him.
Well, I think spring has really sprung this time. Get out and take a walk or bike ride — it will surprise your neighbors. Have a good week and remember to "pay it forward."
