Alna Column: Town meeting done, events at HVNC
Well, town meeting is behind the us. First Selectman David Abbott, Treasurer Aaron Miller, Road Commissioner Jeff Verney, and Ralph Hilton, who will sit on the school committee were all sworn in Saturday. The new fire truck with foam system article was passed after a lively discussion. It will be cheaper now, rather than later when old truck kicks the bucket. Some of the men in our town realized this from buying equipment of their own; it is less expensive now than down the road.
Noah Jordan participated in the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing contest where 255,000 students were involved. Will have more later on about this.
HVNC is having fundraisers to build two more buildings. The center is growing by leaps and bounds. Its membership is growing every month. Community support for this project started off with a $2,500 donation from Wayne Averill. As my dad would have said, "He is just breaking the ice." Bambi Jones and Tracy Moskovitz knows this is a big undertaking. It’s very ambitious on their part. Look how far we have come since we cofounded it in 2007. This is a family- and environmentally-friendly place to visit, to have fun and to learn about the world of trees, etc.
Vernal pools will be the draw at HVNC from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 12. These are small bodies of water or a small ponds. The life cycle of many amphibians and turtles relies on the organisms that live in these pools. Come and explore with the volunteers, bring a notebook and small net if you have one; preregistration is advised. The timber framing class will start April 24. For more information, visit www.hvnc.org.
I have a suggestion for April 12: Spend your day at HVNC, and then come down the road to the Alna Volunteer Fire Department. The ham and baked bean supper will be starting at 4:30 p.m. and last until the food runs out. Now, I don't have to tell you how good the cooks in Alna are, do I? Get there early and visit with your friends and neighbors. These suppers are so good that they had to move the table area out in the bays to accommodate the number of people who come to support the department. Ham, beans, salads, rolls, pies, a 50/50 raffle and pie auction round out the fun.
May your week end better than mine started. I hope this makes the paper. I forgot it was Monday. Shame on me. Well, I am getting old.
