Alna wins ConnectME grant for high-speed internet
Alna has won its latest request for a ConnectME Authority grant to help get high–speed internet access to the Puddle Dock and Head Tide villages, Alna Third Selectman Doug Baston announced in an email Wednesday morning.
The town asked for the $80,951 toward a project that would expand access about 5.5 miles. Charter Communications would cover the other $103,532 needed, the application stated. In 2012, Alna won a $122,000 ConnectME grant to help get high-speed internet access to 81 homes on West Alna, Cross and Lothrop roads. The new project seeks to bring access to 73 potential subscribers.
“I’m glad that we pursued it and I’m glad we were successful,” First Selectman David Abbott said in a phone interview Wednesday. “Eventually we’ll get everybody hooked up, but we’re getting there.”
Baston, interviewed separately Wednesday, said ConnectME awarded the town’s full request that will be its share of the project. He said he was feeling “satisfaction” at the outcome. He credited residents’ petition in support of the application as having helped the process. It shows what residents can do, he said.
