Annemarie L. Kurzius
Beloved mother, Nana and Great Nana, Annemarie Louise Kurzius, of Naples, Florida and Boothbay Harbor, Maine passed away Jan. 4, 2026 at the age of 95.
Annemarie was born in Moline, Illinois to Henry Harrs and Elsa (Busch) Harrs. Her sister Barbara joined the family eight years later. When Annemarie was 5 she accompanied her parents back to visit grandparents in Lubeck, Germany and six months later she spoke fluent German. She later moved to New York with her family and lived in Clayton, City Island and Queens.
When she was in sixth grade, she had her future mother-in-law as a teacher. She graduated high school at the age of 16, attended Adelphi University and Barbizon School of Modeling.
Annemarie met Robert E. Kurzius, the love of her life when she was 17. They married the following year on July 3, 1949 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bellrose, New York and honeymooned at his family cottage in Ocean Point, Maine. The first of six children was born the following year. They lived in Floral Park and then Upper Brookville, New York.
Annemarie was instrumental in her husband’s professional success as a builder, broker, developer investing in real estate and building many custom homes all over Long Island, New York and later in Maine. Together with their children they owned and operated a car dealership in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, (Brothers Chevrolet Buick) and built a second dealership (Brother’s Chevrolet) in Woolwich, Maine. Annemarie and her husband relocated to Boothbay Harbor in 1984, and in 1989 they began dividing their time between Maine and southwest Florida.
When Annemarie’s husband died in 2005, she began a glorious second chapter reinventing her personal style, traveling far and wide, collecting art and jewelry and personally developing and maintaining an expansive garden, featured on the Boothbay Region Garden Club House and Garden Tour. Annemarie volunteered for many years at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and St. Andrews Thrift Shop. At the age of 75, Annemarie began working with a physical trainer in Maine and Florida. She always said it was the best thing she ever did. She also walked daily. Annemarie was a loyal wife and wonderful mother. She cooked, baked and read voraciously on a variety of topics. For many years she single handedly hosted Thanksgiving dinner for her ever-expanding family.
Annemarie was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Kurzius in 2005, sons, Robert E Kurzius Jr. in 2009 and Richard E Kurzius in 2016, and sister Barbara Balazs in 2020.
Annemarie is survived by daughters Linda Yarmosh (Edward Yarmosh) and Joy Perry and sons Edward Henry Kurzius (Lori Kurzius) and Ronald E. Kurzius, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Annemarie was devoted to her family and indelibly touched all their lives with her kind heart, joie de vivre and irrepressible spirit. She had a sparkling personality and inspired countless others as she stayed active and aged with grace and enthusiasm. Annemarie had a special talent with babies and often elicited their first belly laugh. When cataract surgery made her sensitive to bright light, she began her penchant for wearing colorful sun hats and stylish sunglasses. Annemarie was simply amazing and will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
Annemarie requested one more party to celebrate her life in lieu of a service.
Contributions in Annemarie’s memory may be made to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, P.O. Box 234, Boothbay, ME 04537. A private burial will be held at the German Cemetery in Waldoboro.
