Annoyed by scams
It’s winter so I suppose it was no surprise that a snowstorm would happen on a Wednesday and cause the dinner to be canceled. Carl Hewitt, chairman of the trustees, said that the lunch was also canceled on Thursday. This was due to the fact that few come to the lunch and much of the lunch is prepared at the Wednesday dinner. Therefore it was just too expensive to have the lunch after the dinner was canceled.
I’m sure many of you have seen the February newsletter. This month it consists of just the calendar and the menu. The three of us who put the newsletter together each month are questioning what information should be in the newsletter and that is the reason it shrunk. We have heard that members just want to know what the menu will be and what is scheduled for after dinner speakers or entertainment. What would you like to see in a newsletter? In the past there was an interest to see trustee meeting notes or minutes along with information on activities and members themselves. We wonder if this is still important to members.
As the song said, “The times they are a changing.” We can’t focus on what was done before; we need to determine where we go from here. What should the Senior Center’s mission be? I wonder. Sometimes I get the sense that the emphasis today is more toward small groups based on family or special interests rather than on all-encompassing groups oriented toward the community. This concept could be a refreshing new view on senior groups and could breathe new life into declining senior centers. Let me know what you think. I would be interested in your ideas.
Are you annoyed by scams? I am. I recently got one supposedly from Microsoft saying that two email messages have been diverted due to maintenance on their databases. All I had to do was click on a link and they would take care of the problem. This of course was a scam and if I had clicked on the link they would be able to get to a lot of my personal data.
Beware of any message or phone call that says a problem has occurred but they can fix it for you. Even if you believe it is from your service provider don’t click or answer or give any information. If you think something might be legitimate, call the service provider using a number you regularly use. Don’t use any number or link that the caller or emailer provides.
We all would like to trust others and like to think that a friendly person with a kind face is a good person. That is the first thing a criminal learns: how to look innocent and kind. Gaining your trust is the first step a criminal will take in gaining your money or identity. Beware of the helping hand.

For those who do like the game of cribbage, the Richmond Seniors have invited the Wiscasset cribbage players to join them for lunch followed by cribbage next Monday, Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m. If you are interested please put your name on the sign up list posted on the bulletin board in our dining room. We need to give them an idea of how many will be going.
