Nancie Atwell, 66, of Southport has been summonsed for a third theft charge after she allegedly shoplifted a dog leash worth less than $30 from Ames Supply in Wiscasset on Oct. 5. According to Wiscasset Police Chief Jeff Lange, security cameras at the store caught Atwell taking the leash.

She also received a summons for Violating Conditions of Release, stemming from a theft charge in April 2016 involving a blouse worth less than $15 from the Reny’s store in Damariscotta. A third charge occurred in 2014.

In June 2016, she was given a deferred disposition that would have dismissed the charges in 2018 if she did not commit any additional crimes. She was also ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, perform 100 hours of community service, and provide proof she is donating her 2015 million-dollar teaching award, the Global Teacher Prize, to the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Atwell was not taken into custody. She has a court date of Nov. 30 at 8:30 a.m. at the courthouse in Wiscasset.
