Barbershop singing in a cappella style started in Tulsa, Okla., 75 years ago. Chord production in a barbershop setting differs from that of a traditional chorus organization primarily with reference to the melody. Barbershop music is based on four parts of different pitch and timbre: the Lead who typically sings the melody line, the tenor slightly above, the bass lowest, with the baritone filling in the missing harmony tones.
