Champagne on the Sheepscot event includes local band and art sale
The Narrow Gauge String Band, known for its traditional music, catchy tunes and laid-back style, will entertain guests at this year's Champagne on the Sheepscot event.
The event will be held on an island in Newcastle surrounded by the Marsh River, an important tributary of the Sheepscot. The date is Saturday, Sept. 13 from 4:30-7 p.m. The island is connected to the mainland by a short causeway over a salt marsh.
This will be the sixth such event organized by the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association, a local land trust and advocacy group, to raise money for its work to conserve and restore the natural and historic heritage of the Sheepscot River watershed.
The band, formed in 1997, currently includes the following members: David Pope, mandolin and vocals, Karl Marean, fiddle, Thomas Block, guitar and vocals, James Buhrendorf, bass and vocals, and Anna Castleman, guitar, harmonica and vocals.
In addition to the music and the delicious hors d'oeuvres, champagne and other refreshments, seven local artists will have paintings for sale with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the SVCA. The artists displaying their work are Deb Arter, Ingrid Bathe, Kelly Brook, Jean Kigel, Jennifer Litchfield, Janet Lockhart and Belva Ann Prycel.
Local artist Lucy Harrington owns the 145-acre property and has lived there in an historic saltwater farm for almost 50 years. She has generously offered the location for the fundraising event, and organized the art exhibit portion of it.
Major sponsors of this year's event are Ames True Value and Supply of Wiscasset and First Advisors, with Soule, Soule & Logan, the Snow Squall Inn & Wicked Good Yoga and Big Barn Coffee among other local businesses also contributing financially.
Tickets are $40, or $125 to become a patron of the event. For more information contact the SVCA at 207-586-5616, svca@sheepscot.org or visit our website at www.sheepscot.org.
