Charles A. Balsdon
Charles A. Balsdon, 94, of Boothbay Harbor passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Aug. 20, 2025, at St Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.
He was born on April 10, 1931, to Edith and Albert Balsdon in Buffalo, New York.
Charles enlisted into the United States Coast Guard in Buffalo, New York right out of high school. He attended boot camp in Cape May New Jersey. He was stationed in Boothbay Harbor at Burnt Island and Ram Island at the start of his career and was stationed in numerous locations throughout his career. However, he fell in love with Boothbay Harbor and made this his permanent home when he retired in 1969. After retiring, he didn’t stop working, he continued on with numerous jobs. He served three years on the local police department, worked at Pierce Marine Company, and even the Boothbay Region Boat Yard. His favorite job, however, was being able to greet everyone every morning from the YMCA front desk. He worked there until he retired.
One thing he loved more than working at the YMCA was his family. He was a family man and was proud of it. From raising his kids to raising his grandkids, he would show up to every sporting event to cheer them on and to make sure they knew he cared. He was always there from sporting events to graduation you could hear him cheering the loudest.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Lorraine Pickell and Barbara Abshagen, both of Buffalo, New York.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Balsdon; two daughters, Elizabeth and Amanda Balsdon; and two sons, Craig and Tyler Balsdon (Amylynn); his grandkids, Alexis Davison, Marissa Davison, Slade Balsdon, Riley Balsdon, Ryker Balsdon, and Dominic Donahoo.
He is also survived by long time best friend, Fran Nicoletta, by the family dog Oakly, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion Hall in Boothbay on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. with a private graveside service at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, at a later date.
If anyone is looking to help out in anyway, please consider donating to the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service. For us they did so much in his final months that we are going to be forever grateful for. They went above and beyond to make sure he got the care he needed, and he was also very thankful.
We also want to thank the wonderful staff over at St. Andrews who looked after him while he was there, you guys were very comforting and attentive.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Boothbay.
