As convenient as it may be at times to stream old movies at home on your television set, there is nothing that compares with watching classic films as they were intended to be seen, on a huge screen, in a darkened theater, sharing the experience with other people.

The great film stars of the past earned their fame not merely because of their acting ability, but because of an elusive quality that made audiences want to see them on the big screen: "the 40-foot face," as it was referred to in an old Hollywood expression.

Lincoln Theater's Classic Film Club, in its inaugural season, is offering film buffs a unique opportunity to choose and see great classic films from the 20s to the 80s, the way they were intended to be screened, starring everyone's favorite 40-foot faces.

Members vote on and choose the films.  While the screenings are free to members, the public is invited to purchase tickets. The enrollment period for membership in the inaugural 2017-18 season closes on Friday September 1st. This will allow enough time to survey the members and select the films for the season.

Membership, at $45 per person, includes: participation in selecting the films; admission to each screening; small popcorn and water at each film; glass of wine or sparkling cider after each film; and more.

Screenings take place the first Friday of the month (except Oct) at 2 p.m. The dates for the 2017-18 season are:  Oct. 13, Nov. 3,  Dec. 1, Jan. 5 and Feb 2.
