A community aligns in support
On March 31, hundreds of people came to the Taste of Maine in Woolwich to lend support to the family of Kimi Hill, the Wiscasset woman who died March 20 in a fall from a truck near The Forks in Somerset County.
Hill left behind two small children, Maci and Brody Hill, twins.
Brooke Pinkham O’Leary, a server at the Taste of Maine, who also happens to be owner Candy Crooker-Gregory’s daughter, didn’t know Kimi or her children. But she knew people who did — Kimi Hill seemed to know nearly everyone — and asked her mother if they could hold a benefit for the twins.
“I said, ‘Mom, let’s do this.’ and she didn’t hesitate.”
Pinkham O’Leary said that from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., 30 percent of the total tab was being set aside for the children, and the servers, all except one, agreed to set aside 30 percent of their tips, too.
That other server gave 100 percent of his tips.
“We had nearly 400 people interested on Facebook,” Pinkham O’Leary said. “And about 400 made reservations.” The overflow was so great that they opened the banquet room upstairs for people to wait, and opened the bar upstairs while they waited. There were 50-50 raffles, many of which were being given entirely to the fund as donations.
Another server, Dori Hamel, said that nearly $300 had been donated before the benefit even began.
A benefit account has been set up for Hill’s twins. Anyone interested in helping can send checks to the Maci and Brody Benefit Fund, P.O. Box 28, South Freeport, Maine, 04078.
