Community energy fund helps Lincoln County residents
Years ago, a few friends got together at a local pub. They started talking about winters in Maine and how some people found it difficult to manage through colder months due to unexpected emergencies and financial hardships.
Now in its eleventh year, the Community Energy Fund has served more than 2,500 families in Lincoln County and raised and dispersed $1 million in energy purchases for residents. Last winter, more than $165,000 was used to buy wood, heating oil, propane, kerosene, electricity and automotive gasoline.
“All of the towns in the county are involved and we network with hospitals, police departments and churches to reach people who are in need,” Robert Clifford, fund secretary and president of Colby & Gale, Inc., said. All assistance is completely confidential.
Each fall, more than 6,000 appeal letters are sent out to ask for donations. The donations that come in, from as far away as Australia, go directly to help those applying.
“Our administrative costs are zero,” Clifford said. “Every cent that is contributed goes to those who need help.” Vendors contribute their costs and services to the project. Primarily used to purchase fuel, the fund can be used for non-energy purchases if a family has a critical financial hardship.
Cards for gasoline may help someone who is battling cancer get to a medical facility. “Usually the energy supplier gives a discount,” Clifford added.
It’s gratifying to see how the idea has grown, he said. Some towns have established their own funds for their own programs and the fund has served as a model for towns in other counties throughout the state.
The fund’s officers also include Todd Maurer, president, and Charlie Ault, treasurer. Those wishing to give may mail their contributions to P.O. Box 40, Bristol, ME 04539.
Those needing assistance should contact their town; the town will help them to complete the request form.
