Court upholds Wiscasset teachers’ award

Justice Daniel Billings on Sept. 17 denied Wiscasset School Department’s motion to vacate an arbitration award to teachers over workshop days.

The school department had requested, and the Department of Education approved, a reduction in school days during the 2017-18 school year due to a long power outage and large number of snow days. The department held the teachers to their contract’s 181 days, even with a reduction in school days, and the union filed a grievance, asking to be paid at the per diem rate for the four additional days. An arbitrator decided in favor of the union. The department appealed.
