DaPonte String Quartet announces summer concerts
The DaPonte String Quartet summer concert series will feature performances in some of Maine’s most beautiful landscapes and historic buildings.
While the quartet returns to many familiar sites, it has also expanded its range to include new venues in Western Maine, and in Southern and Midcoast Maine.
Summer Series 1 kicks off in three largely-new venues, with a string trio concert, “Three by Three,” featuring music by Beethoven, Schubert, and Erno Dohnanyi.
It will be performed at the Denmark Arts Center in Denmark on June 22, the historic Centennial Hall in Harpswell on July 9, and St. Columba’s Church in Boothbay on July 11. (The quartet becomes a Trio for this series as one member recovers from some routine surgery.)
The DaPonte gets into full swing, as a quartet once again, with Summer Series 2, “From Russia With Love,” featuring string quartets by Haydn, John Adams, and Alexander Borodin.
The series will be performed in Harpswell at Centennial Hall on July 23; in South Bristol at the Union Church on July 24; and in Boothbay at St. Columba’s Church on July 25.
Summer Series 3, “Sunrise/Sunset,” takes the Quartet to new territory. In addition to the Centennial Hall in Harpswell on August 6, and St. Columba’s Church in Boothbay on August 8, the Quartet will perform this series in the historic Laudholm Farm barn at the Wells Reserve in Wells on August 11. “Sunrise/Sunset” consists of music by Haydn, Respighi, and Verdi, plus Bach arias with guest soprano Karol Bennett.
The Daponte Quartet wraps up the summer with four special concerts featuring a return to an old favorite, the music-friendly Visitor Center at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, as well as performances at new venues in Portland and Paris Hill.
The quartet launches its own mini-festival at the end of August at the Botanical Gardens in Boothbay with two concerts: “Late in the Season” features guest artists and works by composers late in their careers.
On August 22 and 27, cellist Joshua Gordon, double bass player Edward Allman, and clarinetist Mark Simonsjoin the Quartet to perform works by Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, Beethoven, and Ingolf Dahl. Admission to the Gardens is included in the ticket price, allowing concert-goers to enjoy one of Maine’s most-visited tourist attractions before the concert.
