Devin talks aquaculture
Spectrum Generations Coastal, 521 Main Street in Damariscotta is hosting its weekly Lunch and Learn program on Wednesday, July 31 at 11:15 a.m.
Following the luncheon, Darling Marine Center Research Biologist and Hatchery Manager Mick Devin will discuss the reality of aquaculture research and its practical applications in sustaining Maine's and even expanding fisheries.
As luncheon guests will learn, the Maine aquaculture industry is diverse, with a variety of marine and freshwater species being raised and experimented with.
During his discussion, Devin will touch on industry trends and outlooks, emerging issues and critical needs, commercial species, natural vs. farm raised habitats, aquaculture facilities, education, research and sustaining Maine's historic fishing industries and way of life along the Maine coast.
The reputation for ingenuity and resourcefulness of the shellfish culture industry in the Northeast will amaze those in attendance as they listen to Mick's overview of Maine vital and growing aquaculture industry.
Until his election to the Maine House of Representatives in November of 2012, Devin sat on the Sea Urchin Zone Council for the Maine Department of Marine Resources and was chairman of the Aquaculture and Marine Technical Board at the Maine Technology Institute. He founded Acadia Seafood International, Inc., a research and development company that was headquartered in Walpole.
Devin lives with his family on Academy Hill Road in Newcastle where he and his wife, Laura, who is a teacher at Woolwich Central School and an artist, are avid and expert gardeners.

The chef's entrée selection for the day will be chicken pot pie. Cost per person is $6 for diners under 60 years of age. All others the suggested donation is $5 per person.
