Doctor directs Tapestry concert featuring DaPonte
Yes, it is absolutely true that, although recently retired from medical practice, Tapestry Singers’ director, Harold “Sandy” Falconer has been leading a double life for years. His cover was originally blown by an alert Providence Sunday Journal reporter on April 30, 1989. Falconer majored in music in college and went on to study medicine, keeping his hand and voice in music through 45 years of doctoring.
Falconer will direct the Tapestry Singers in an upcoming program of works by Bach and Mozart, accompanied by the DaPonte String Quartet, organist Sean Fleming, plus flute and double bass. The concerts will highlight early compositions of both masters. Bach composed Cantatas 196 and 182 at ages 23 and 29, respectively, while Mozart wrote Misericordias Domini and Missa Brevis in B-flat when he was 19 and 21. As an additional treat, Myles Jordan will play the violoncello piccolo in a chorale from Bach Cantata 6. Soloists for the concert include Amy Lalime and Susan Hunt mezzo-sopranos, Timothy Johnson tenor, and Richard Francis baritone.
The concerts will take place at the Second Congregational Church, 51 Main Street in Newcastle, Saturday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 2 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available at the door or may be purchased in advance from the Maine Coast Book Shop and Café, from chorus members or by calling 207-644-1174. Children and students are admitted for free.
The DaPonte String Quartet has performed and taught all over the world and received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, the Music Teachers National Association, and the Philadelphia Musical Fund Society. Visit www.daponte.org for more information.
